A Febre do Samba is a tribute to the great sambas ever written.
From the book O Batuque Carioca by Guilherme Gonçalves and Odilon Costa, which shows the origin and the different rhythms of each percussion ensemble of Rio de Janeiro samba schools, Guilherme Gonçalves, the play writer and musical director, began a survey of how the samba songs were played by each specific group at a particular time. From then on, he put together a play that portrayed these 80 years of samba history.
A Febre do Samba premiered in January 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. Originally designed for a small pre-carnival season, due to the great success, it was extended for two more weeks after the carnival. Febre has already toured several times over Brazil and has been seen by more than 30,000 people.
The play has a total of 22 musicians: three singers, two cavaquinhos, a seven string guitar, and 16 percussionists that perform the exact rhythm that each school printed in the parades in their respective time. The repertoire is chosen among 150 of the most important sambas ever writen.
Among the special guests are: Claudinho and Selmynha SorrisoZ (ballroom master and flag bearer of Beija-Flor), Drum Master Odilon Costa and Manoel Dionísio, founder of The Ballroom Master and Flag Bearer School.
We also have dancers from the main Rio´s samba schools.
